Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. Everfuel A/S has announced the production of first hydrogen at its HySynergy facility in Fredericia, Denmark. The initial production is the first step towards ramping up the electrolyser facility to supply green hydrogen to customers. Commercial production is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2023.
Engineers from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have said that by using high-frequency vibrations to divide individual water molecules during electrolysis, the team managed to split the water molecules to release 14 times more hydrogen compared with standard electrolysis techniques.
H2U Technologies has demonstrated proton exchange membrane electrolyzer stacks that replace expensive and scarce iridium catalysts with inexpensive and abundant catalyst materials. Cavendish Renewable Technology (CRT) has signed a technology development and licensing agreement with Adani New Industries Limited. The agreement includes infrastructure costs for further development of intellectual property, licence fees and royalties on successful commercialisation of CRT’s electrolyser technologies.
US-based FuelCell Energy has announced it is accepting orders for its solid oxide electrolyzer and solid oxide fuel cell platform. Thanks to its high efficiency, the company’s electrolyzer technology is expected to lower the cost of hydrogen production by 20–30% compared to low-temperature alternatives.
Cepsa has announced an investment of more than €3 billion to establish the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley. The company will build two plants with a total capacity of 2 GW to produce green hydrogen. The plants, with 1 GW of capacity each, will be located in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) and Campo de Gibraltar (Cádiz).
Battolyser Systems has revealed plans to build a 1 GW factory in the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to manufacture its integrated battery/electrolyser system. Acting also as the company’s HQ and R&D center, the plant is expected to open in the second half of 2024, with the final investment decision scheduled for late 2023.
H2B2 and PowiDian are collaborating to provide the future Rijnstate hospital in Elst, the Netherlands, with a Power-to-Power (P2P) system that integrates solar PV and hydrogen, enabling the hospital to cover up to 60% of its energy needs and saving 600,000 m³ of natural gas over the next 15 years.
Portugal’s Fusion Fuel has announced its entry into the centralized electrolyzer market with the introduction of its HEVO-Chain solution, which is currently undergoing comprehensive performance and reliability testing. The company expects the first HEVO-Chain units to enter commercial use in 2024.
Infinity Power, Masdar and Hassan Allam Utilities have signed a framework agreement with leading Egyptian state-backed organizations for the development of green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The first 2 GW plant is scheduled to be operational by 2026.
