Honda to end fuel cell system production at U.S. joint venture

Honda has decided to discontinue production of its current fuel cell system at its U.S. joint venture Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC before the end of 2026.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced that it will discontinue production of the current model of fuel cell system manufactured at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, a joint venture between Honda and General Motors. Production is expected to end before the close of 2026, after which Honda will transition to a next-generation fuel cell system developed independently by the company.

Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC was established in January 2017 in Brownstown, Michigan, and was described as the first joint venture in the automotive industry dedicated to producing advanced fuel cell systems. Through the collaboration, Honda and General Motors combined their expertise in development, production, and procurement. According to the companies, this resulted in several synergies, including improved durability and low-temperature resistance of fuel cell systems, the introduction of advanced production technologies, and cost reductions achieved through shared parts suppliers.

Following the outcomes of the collaboration, the two companies held discussions regarding the future of the joint venture. These discussions concluded with a mutual agreement to discontinue fuel cell system production at FCSM. Honda stated that it will continue to leverage fuel cell technologies developed in-house and aims to expand business opportunities to grow its hydrogen business as one of its new core business areas.

The company reiterated its broader environmental objectives, including its target to achieve carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050. Honda is also pursuing what it describes as “zero environmental impact” across the full product lifecycle, supported by initiatives focused on carbon neutrality, clean energy, and resource circulation.
