Design for first industrial-scale LOHC storage plant underway

LOHC
Frames, Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies and MAN Energy Solutions are collaborating on the design of a modular and skid-mounted LOHC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier) storage plant for what will be the first industrial scale LOHC plant in Europe.

Set to be located at CHEMPARK Dormagen in Germany, the plant will have the capacity to store five tons of hydrogen per day – enough to fuel half a million vehicle kilometres for a hydrogen-powered car.

Partnership

In 2019, Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies, Frames Group, and MAN Energy Solutions formed a partnership for the design, supply and start-up of industrial-scale hydrogen storage plants based on Hydrogenious’s LOHC technology. The plant’s reactor will be designed by MAN Energy Solutions.

Road transport

In the LOHC storage plant, hydrogen is chemically bonded to the LOHC material benzyl toluene, a thermal oil. This carrier oil can be transported under ambient conditions in conventional and existing logistics infrastructures comparable to the delivery of petroleum or diesel. From the plant in the CHEMPARK Dormagen, the LOHC loaded with hydrogen will be loaded to a truck for road transport to LOHC release plants and hydrogen offtakers in Europe, among others in Rotterdam.
