Samsung E&A launches PEM-based green hydrogen system

Samsung E&A has introduced its 100 MW PEM-based green hydrogen production system, Compass H2-P, developed in collaboration with Nel Hydrogen to expand its clean-energy technology portfolio.

According to Samsung E&A, Compass H2-P is the industry’s first 100 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based green hydrogen production solution. It follows the company’s alkaline electrolysis system, Compass H2-A, released earlier in 2025. Designed for large-scale hydrogen generation, the system produces 99.9995 % hydrogen at 30 bar and reduces overall plant footprint through optimized positioning of the electrolyzer stack and balance of plant.

The partnership between Samsung E&A and Nel Hydrogen now enables the provision of both alkaline and PEM technologies, allowing the companies to deliver hydrogen systems suited to varying renewable-power profiles. Their joint platform covers all project phases from pre-feasibility to EPC and includes a full performance guarantee.

The Compass H2 framework offers an integrated ‘wrap guarantee’ covering the entire system, which the companies state improves project reliability and bankability by combining equipment, plant design, and operational performance assurance within one contractual structure.

Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of Samsung E&A, said: “The launch of Compass H2-P is an important milestone in the mid- to long-term partnership between Nel Hydrogen and Samsung E&A. We plan to fully advance into the global hydrogen market based on our diverse portfolio.”
