The new facility will have the capacity to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, replacing conventional hydrogen in Repsol’s industrial centres and cutting CO₂ emissions by as much as 167,000 tonnes per year. This impact is comparable to two-thirds of Spain’s entire fleet of pure electric vehicles in 2024.
The Cartagena electrolyser is scheduled to come online in 2029. It will represent a milestone for the Hydrogen Valley of the Region of Murcia, which aims to create an efficient ecosystem by matching production capacity with industrial demand. The project also foresees the future injection of renewable hydrogen into the natural gas network and into Spain’s planned hydrogen backbone.
The project has been recognised as strategic and of common European interest (IPCEI) by both the European Commission and the Spanish Government. It will receive €155 million in funding through the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). Enagás Renovable holds a 25% stake in the development.
