Water electrolyzers are electrochemical devices used to split water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passage of an electrical current. There are four main types of electrolyzers: alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are already mature, while anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolyzers are still under development. These technologies differ in numerous ways, most notably in cell design and variations within components. John Cockerill and a leading Moroccan energy company have reached an agreement to create a joint venture offering integrated green hydrogen solutions in Morocco. In particular, the agreement is aimed at creating a gigafactory dedicated to the manufacture of electrolyzers.
Anders Opedal (Equinor) and Dr. Markus Krebber (RWE) agreed today on a strategic energy partnership between their companies. The agreement includes large-scale projects that will contribute to the European energy supply as well as to the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in Germany and the EU.

Researchers from Pusan National University have investigated the heat flows and phase changes within a cryogenic hydrogen fuel tank, to reveal key insights for their safe and efficient design. After a six-month construction period, Air Liquide has completed a hydrogen pipeline to thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg, Germany’s largest steel mill. Measuring approximately four kilometres in length, the pipeline connects the Duisburg steel mill site with Air Liquide’s hydrogen network in the Ruhr district.
Everfuel A/S has announced the production of first hydrogen at its HySynergy facility in Fredericia, Denmark. The initial production is the first step towards ramping up the electrolyser facility to supply green hydrogen to customers. Commercial production is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2023.
Engineers from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have said that by using high-frequency vibrations to divide individual water molecules during electrolysis, the team managed to split the water molecules to release 14 times more hydrogen compared with standard electrolysis techniques.
