Uniper, AM Green sign renewable ammonia offtake

Uniper and AM Green have signed a long-term binding offtake agreement covering up to 500,000 metric tons per year of RFNBO-certified renewable ammonia from India.

The agreement covers renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin and is described by the companies as the first such offtake agreement signed by an Indian producer.

Under the agreement, Uniper will offtake up to 500,000 metric tons per year of renewable ammonia from AM Green’s green ammonia projects. First shipments are expected as early as 2028 from AM Green Ammonia’s first plant, with a capacity of 1 million metric tons per year, which is currently under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.

The companies described the contract as an important milestone for India’s ambition to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen and green ammonia and stated that it aligns with the objectives of the country’s National Hydrogen Mission.

For Uniper, the agreement supports the development of a diversified portfolio of renewable and low-carbon molecules for European customers. Renewable ammonia is expected to serve both as an industrial feedstock and as a potential hydrogen carrier, supporting decarbonization in sectors including chemicals, fertilizers, refining, and, over time, shipping. The partners also stated that they will continue working with certification bodies to ensure traceability and high-integrity reporting for European end users.

“This partnership is a milestone for India’s role in the global energy transition,” said Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder and Group Chairman of AM Green. “AM Green’s renewable ammonia is designed to meet stringent European RFNBO compliance standards.”

Michael Lewis, CBE, Chief Executive Officer of Uniper, said: “This agreement with AM Green Ammonia is a key building block in our strategy to provide our customers with reliable access to renewable and low carbon molecules at scale.”
