Vilnius District Heating Company is developing the facility in partnership with the city’s municipal administration unit, with the goal of decarbonising district heating through locally produced green hydrogen. The project is being implemented under the EU-backed Green Hydrogen Programme and is part of a national strategy to reduce CO₂ emissions in the heating sector by integrating renewables and hydrogen technologies.
This contract follows an earlier collaboration between MT Group and IMI on a green hydrogen production plant in Klaipėda, developed by Klaipėda State Seaport Authority to supply green hydrogen for vessels, port equipment and private transportation.
Giuseppe Buscemi, President EMEA for Process Automation at IMI, said: “Lithuania is setting an example by advancing clean energy, and we are proud to support this green hydrogen leadership. Delivering the PEM electrolyser for Vilnius builds on our strong partnership with MT Group and further strengthens our long-term commitment to supporting the country’s energy transition.”
“This award represents another milestone in the energy transition for Vilnius. By choosing a trusted partner like IMI, we ensure delivery of world-class PEM technology to support Lithuania’s net zero ambitions,” said Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group.
Gerimantas Bakanas, CEO of Vilnius District Heating Company, emphasised that modern electrolysis technology will ensure high efficiency, quality and safety at the future facility. “IMI is one of the leading players in green hydrogen technology. Its solutions are used in some of the most advanced electrolysis projects around the world, and we’re confident that this partnership will contribute to setting a new standard for sustainable energy in Vilnius,” said Mr Bakanas.
Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for Q4 2025, with commissioning planned in 2026.
