Foundation stone laid for 100 MW electrolyzer in Hamburg

Construction has begun on the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub, where a 100 MW PEM electrolyzer is being developed on the former Moorburg power plant site ahead of planned 2027 operations.

Hamburg’s First Mayor, Dr. Peter Tschentscher, joined senior city officials and representatives from Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke to mark the start of construction of the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub by laying the official foundation stone. The project partners expect the plant to begin commercial operations in the second half of 2027, producing about 10,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to support decarbonization efforts across the port and local industry.

Following funding approval from the federal and state governments last summer, the main construction contracts were signed and the electrolyzer order was placed with Siemens Energy in September 2024. Demolition of the former Moorburg power plant, which began in October 2023, cleared space for the electrolyzer and its connection to the hydrogen network. After taking over part of the site during the summer, the project team began preparing the 16,000 m² area, installing 906 gravel vibro-compaction columns to stabilize the ground. The floor slab has been completed, and structural engineering work is in progress.

The building that will house the electrolyzer and compressors is scheduled for completion by mid-next year, after which the PEM stacks will be delivered. Once operational, the green hydrogen will be supplied via the HH-WIN hydrogen distribution network and a planned trailer loading station.

“The industrial heart of our city beats in the port – and this is precisely where we are helping to ensure that hydrogen will be produced in the future for the climate-neutral energy generation of tomorrow,” said Dr. Melanie Leonhard, Senator of the Hamburg Ministry of Economics and Innovation.

“The Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub is more than just an energy project. It proves that green hydrogen is an investable asset today and that a climate-friendly energy transition can be implemented quickly,” said Dr. Alexandra Bernstorff, Managing Partner of Luxcara.

“We are getting serious in Hamburg and moving into the implementation phase. We believe in hydrogen technology and are demonstrating with our Hamburg solution that pioneering green hydrogen projects can be driven forward through local commitment,” said Kirsten Fust, Spokesperson for the Management Board of Hamburger Energiewerke.
