Rely to deliver FEED for French e-SAF plant

Verso Energy has awarded Rely the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the DEZiR electro-based sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) project in Petit-Couronne, France, advancing plans for industrial-scale e-SAF production.

The FEED phase will define the technical scope required to reduce project risk and prepare the pathway toward engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution. As the first industrial-scale e-SAF development in France to enter FEED and one of the most advanced initiatives of its kind in Europe, the project is positioned to support the country’s emerging e-fuels sector.

The integrated design incorporates biogenic CO₂ capture, water electrolysis powered by renewable and low-carbon electricity, e-methanol synthesis, and conversion to e-kerosene using the methanol-to-jet process, all configured within a single standardized facility to support future deployment across Europe. The approach centers on a standardized platform for methanol-to-jet production that is intended to enable replication, cost reduction, and scalability across additional projects.

DEZiR has been selected under the 2024 European Innovation Fund as well as the France 2030 program, both supporting industrial decarbonization and low-carbon fuel deployment.

Verso Energy and Rely plan to develop seven e-fuels production facilities internationally, which together are expected to supply more than 500,000 tons of e-SAF annually. According to the companies, this output could achieve up to 90% lower lifecycle emissions compared to conventional jet fuel.

“We are on track to meet the 2030 targets for e-SAF in aviation, and starting the FEED of the DEZiR project is a critical step in our journey and a significant investment,” said Antoine Huard, Chief Executive Officer of Verso Energy. By partnering with Rely, we are leveraging their expertise in large-scale industrial projects and their commitment to standardization and innovation.”

Damien Eyriès, Chief Executive Officer of Rely, added: “The award of the FEED contract for the DEZiR project is a testament to the strong partnership between Rely and Verso Energy. This milestone reflects Rely’s unique expertise in Power-to-X integration and our ability to deliver innovative, scalable, and competitive solutions for our clients.”
