Australia’s first large-scale renewable hydrogen plant is due to be built in the Pilbara, after the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) conditionally approved $47.5 million towards ENGIE’s renewable hydrogen and ammonia project near Karratha in Western Australia, scheduled for completion in 2024.

Topsoe and green ammonia early mover First Ammonia have signed an agreement for the reservation of 5 GW of solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) units to produce green ammonia. To date, this is the largest such an agreement in the world, for any type of electrolyzer, and could help displace nearly 5 bcm of natural gas.
